AUGUST 30, MEETING
President Tripp called the meeting to order. Following the pledge of allegiance, Linda Sanders gave the invocation. Guests included two Downtown Club Rotarians, one of whom was Patty Cardin, Colby Cardin’s mother. GRSP student, Laura D’Amato was also present. As Vic Burchfield is on vacation there was no Roto-Lotto drawing. Hope you’re having a great time, Vic, wherever your fancies have carried you.
AUTISM
In the upcoming weeks, you are likely to see these jigsaw puzzle pieces from time to time. Let them remind you of the new Autism Hope Center that is coming to Columbus. On October 6, the Muscogee County Autism
Support Group will be sponsoring an inaugural walk / run in Columbus to raise funds for and awareness of this dreaded affliction that is on the rise throughout the United States.
So, hopefully, many Muscogee Rotarians will pull out their walking / running clogs and be ready to participate in the walk / run on October 6, 2007.
DISTRICT GOVERNOR’S VISIT
A reminder to Muscogee Rotarians: On September 13, District Governor William (Bill) Woulfin will be attending the Club’s regular meeting and will be the morning’s speaker.
Eddie Roberts has announced that approximately fifteen Rose Hill Middle School students will be present to meet and greet District 6900’s District Governor.
All members are asked to make a special effort to be present at the September 13th meeting.

ROTARY SHARES
AUGUST 30 SPEAKER
The morning’s speaker, Jenny Adams, a retired attorney, provided an informative talk about the
upcoming Steeplechase at Calloway. She included in her presentation a bit of interesting history about steeplechase events in general as well as our local event. According to Ms. Adams, the term “steeplechase” has its origins in Ireland, evolving from two young men racing each other on horseback from steeple to steeple through the Irish countryside. The Columbus steeplechase began in 1985 and currently holds the distinction of having the fourth largest purse in the country. The proceeds of the Steeplechase at Calloway are earmarked for the benefit of the arts, supporting such organizations as the Columbus Museum, the Springer, the Ida Cason Calloway Foundation, and Historic Columbus.
This year’s Steeplechase at Calloway will take place on November 3.
GUATEMALAN SCHOOL ESSAY CONTESTS
On August 30, the Muscogee Rotary Club transferred $300 to Unicornio Azul, an organization in Guatemala that is sponsoring an architectural / patrimonial restoration project. As a part of the project, the Muscogee Rotary Club is funding a school essay / graphics contest in connection with its worldwide literacy undertaking. Our correspondent in Guatemala sent a thank-you note to Lou Ann Medlock, Director of Foundation. The letter is reprinted in relevant part below. In reading this letter, bear in mind that the writer is a French national, for whom English is a third language.
“Dear LouAnn,
thank you …... to have sent the money and excuse my bad english.
Let me give you the last news about the project :
- as we are in the capital now, tomorrow, we'll buy the prizes. We'll try to find motivating prizes….small radios
and backpacks for winning primary students and calculators or watches for secundary students. For the participating schools, we want to buy …..the whole collection of small traditional
guatemalan stories (16) with drawings included and some plays like scrabble or the chinese checkers (excuse me I don't
know the words in english).
- we have 5 primary schools and 1 or 2 secundary schools included in the project. Other 3 didn't enter. Sometimes motivate the profesors to do something more is more dificult than to motivate the students …But the professors who will participate are motivated and with some good ideas. [W]e'll do the small ceremony of prizing in each school probably in diferent dates. [W]e'll take pictures of the works and of the winning children and their professors….
Best regards

WILDERNESS DAY
On November 3, 2007 the Muscogee Rotary Club is partnering with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Columbus and the Roosevelt Stables to sponsor a “Wilderness Day” for a group of big brother big sister matches.
The day will start with a meandering horseback ride on one of the forested trails in Roosevelt State Park. (RU 9/22) Following the ride, the stable manager will give a presentation on basic horse care. After lunch, provided by the Muscogee Rotary Club, one of the FDR rangers will present an Interpretive Program that will consist, in part, of wilderness survival techniques that can be adapted to an urban setting. The afternoon will consist of a presentation on water safety and basic canoeing skills to be followed by approximately two hours of paddling on Lake Franklin. Adult supervision will include the big brother / big sister matches of the participating
children as well as volunteers from Muscogee Rotary and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Columbus, and, for the trail ride aspect of the day, two volunteers from the Roosevelt Stables.
The day is intended as a fun event which will include experience broadening opportunities for area youth.
Special thanks to Terry Sybrant for his contribution toward getting this new program underway.

SHARE THE INFO FUND
Help add to the Club’s coffers! For a “fee” of $1.00, you will have an audience for whatever tidbit of miscellaneous information that you choose to share.
August 30 contributors included Jim Irvin (the morning speaker’s father was a Muscogee Rotary charter member), Delane Chappell (her daughter got a job), Dea Hagues (her son is buying his first home).
THE BULLETIN
To share a bit of the Club’s past in the
monthly Club History column, speak to Eddie
Roberts, Public Relations Director.
Are your initials and birthday hidden in this week’s Bulletin? If so, speak to Dea Hagues before the end of the meeting.
REIMBURSEMENTS
Treasurer Anne Hopp has developed a new Payment requisition form that must be completed if you are seeking reimbursement for personal funds disbursed for Club purposes. If you are seeking reimbursement, speak to Anne to obtain a copy of the Payment Requisition form.
CAN YOU HELP OUR ATTENDANCE?
It’s not always possible to make our Thursday meeting. The pressing needs of business, out of town travel or illness might keep us away. It IS easy to make up once you’ve missed a meeting. RI rules allow 2 weeks on either side of the missed meeting to visit another club or make up on-line. There is a Rotary Club meeting EVERY DAY of the week except Friday in our area. Add to that the ease of making up on-line at www.rotaryeclubone.org and you can see how easy it is to have PERFECT attendance. Help Muscogee Rotary achieve perfect attendance by making up each time you miss a meeting. Be sure to let Sgt.-at-Arms Jimmy Roddy know when you have made up a meeting.
