July of 1994 was a particularly trying
time for the people of South Georgia as Hurricane Alberto stalled
over the area dumping huge amounts of rain and causing extensive
flooding. Rotary District 6900 went into action and, with help
from Rotarians around the world including Muscogee Rotary, provided
disaster aid to flood victims. The Rotary motto for the year,
"Be a Friend" was particularly appropriate during this
time and the months to come.
October brought sadness to our city
and our club in the tragic death of Mark Kamensky's father, Harry.
Harry was a civic leader in Columbus and had been a pioneer in
adaptive reuse of historic buildings in the city, including the
very hotel in which we met. As a tribute to Harry and to demonstrate
our affection for Mark, the club conferred a Paul Harris fellowship,
posthumously, in his name. Mark's mother, Frances, and sister,
Carol Chanin were present for the ceremony.
Vocational service was recognized with
vocational displays and Rothschild school career day, spearheaded
by Vic Burchfield. Lyn White of Hardaway high school was selected
as Vocational Teacher of the Year. This project was again headed
by South Bryan who also did yeoman's work as our bulletin editor.
A special event, requested by International
President Bill Huntley, was a Rotary Windows on the world display
showcasing each club's activities. Muscogee Rotary's display was
designed and executed beautifully by Carolyn Marlow-Nelson and
Linda Sanders and exhibited our club's many projects through a
window at Columbus College.
Club social events in addition to the
river party included a December 3 Christmas party at the Officer's
Club. Bud Red and Jimmy Roddy hosted Rotary night at the Springer
with a production of "Pump Boys and Dinettes" featuring
Jimmy's wife, Janet as a star of the show. June 9 saw a club sponsored
night at the ball park. Despite the 90 degree heat, members and
their families had a rousing time cheering the Redstixx.
Allen Kerr once again spearheaded the
second annual Muscogee Rotary Golf Tourney, this year billed as
a Cinco de Mayo celebration and held, appropriately, on that date.
Again, the weather cooperated and money was raised for club projects.
