During 1994-95, Mark Kamensky joined
the ranks of Joan Burks and Herb Cawthorne as Paul Harris Fellows.
Herb (sometimes known as Conan the Rotarian for his intrepid adventures
throughout the world) was recognized for 21 years of perfect Rotary
attendance! Herb had been a member of East Columbus Rotary club
before joining Muscogee Rotary as a charter member.
Ed Burdeshaw coordinated the Group
Study Exchange team visit. This group from Argentina was unique
in that is consisted of all women. Through a connection made by
host Carolyn Marlow-Nelson, a student exchange was arranged for
her son Jason to spend a school year in Brazil.
April 7-8 brought the District Assembly
and PETS to Columbus, as usual. This year, Muscogee Rotary was
designated the host club. John Kelleher accepted the task of planning
and organizing this event, held at the Trade Center, and executed
it flawlessly. Compliments were heard from all areas of District
6900 and the assembly gave our club district wide recognition.
Speakers for 1994-95 included District
Governor Robert Jinright, District Attorney Doug Pullen, Paul
Pierce, Springer Director, Jim Wetherington, Police Chief and
newspaper publisher Billy Watson who died, tragically, of heat
stroke in July, 1995.
The District 6900 conference was held
at Jekyll Island and was well attended by Muscogee Rotarians.
Once again, the club was awarded the Presidential Citation.
Ann Henderson, Vice-President of Human
Resources at AFLAC, took the reins as the fifth president of Muscogee
Rotary on June 29, 1995. Once again, the district governor's visit
would come early. DG Barry Smith and his wife Vivian made their
visit to the club on July 13. International President Herb Brown
had issued the "Calgary Challenge" to Rotary clubs throughout
the world to increase membership. Governor Barry brought the message
to our club, and President Ann would carry it out.
Two teams, under the leadership of
Pete Helmer and Mark Kamensky, would compete to sponsor the most
new members. The program was so successful that the club welcomed
22 new members through March of 1995!
